There’s something about a log cabin that calls out to the Crooked Brothers from Winnipeg. They are an alt roots trio touring Alberta with their newest CD “Lawrence, Where’s Your Knife?. Crooked Brothers are Darwin Baker on acoustic instruments. Jesse Matas and Matt Foster. And when they are at home in Manitoba, they are actually building a log cabin near Falcon Lake. Their name comes from the old time tradition of family bands and also a reference to Ironwood, a novel by William Kennedy. The trio’s Darwin Baker credits the soundtrack from O Brother Where Art Thou to influencing the band and the appreciation of acoustic old time music . It’s not just the music but he says it’s about the community. And, Winnipeg has a strong music community.
The Crooked Brothers are touring Alberta and Western Canada in a four-door hatchback. After that, they are planning to tour in Europe in the Spring of 2012. They’ll play in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands before taking a holiday in Spain. They’ll be back home to finish work on their log cabin in Falcon Lake Manitoba in the summer.
