David Myles is warm, easy performer from Nova Scotia. He his audiences to their feet wherever he plays. His unabashed joy at being on stage is infectious and his musicianship is superb. If you add his tendency and story-telling to his audiences with humorous anecdotes, then it comes as no surprise that David Myles is an instant hit with live audiences everywhere he goes.
At the heart of it all, David Myles is the songwriting that has made him a favourite with audiences everywhere he plas. Davide is a gifted and spirited writer and he often collaborates with artists from across genres.

Into the Sun is David’s fifth studio recording and his sixth album. It is co-produced with Charles Austin and Graeme Campbell in Halifax, Into the Sun is an exuberant follow-up to the award-winning Turn Time Off, and takes us a little deeper in to the wonderful world of David Myles. David will be touring Alberta in January 2012.

There’s something about a log cabin that calls out to the Crooked Brothers from Winnipeg. They are an alt roots trio touring Alberta with their newest CD “Lawrence, Where’s Your Knife?. Crooked Brothers are Darwin Baker on acoustic instruments. Jesse Matas and Matt Foster. And when they are at home in Manitoba, they are actually building a log cabin near Falcon Lake. Their name comes from the old time tradition of family bands and also a reference to Ironwood, a novel by William Kennedy. The trio’s Darwin Baker credits the soundtrack from O Brother Where Art Thou to influencing the band and the appreciation of acoustic old time music . It’s not just the music but he says it’s about the community. And, Winnipeg has a strong music community.

The Crooked Brothers are touring Alberta and Western Canada in a four-door hatchback. After that, they are planning to tour in Europe in the Spring of 2012. They’ll play in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands before taking a holiday in Spain. They’ll be back home to finish work on their log cabin in Falcon Lake Manitoba in the summer.

Whitehorse is a new name but the two principals are familiar in Canada. Individually, Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet are Whitehorse. They are already two of most acclaimed roots-oriented singer-songwriters in Canada. They are now reinventing themselves as Whitehorse and have released their first self-titled CD Whitehorse. But as Doucet and McClelland explain, their joint project is much more than a simple diversion from their day jobs. Their new album is about bringing their two fan bases together. There is a lot of overlap already, but by bringing some of their old material together and putting it in a new light and then changing the tunes around it is a good way of introducing this new band.

The pair came up with most of the instrumentation on Whitehorse, with Doucet’s former bandmate Barry Mirochnick playing most of the drums. The bulk of the sessions took place at Hamilton, ON studio Catherine North, with Michael Chambers doing the engineering and mixing. The result is eight songs totalling 24 minutes. This is a record. It is a very short record but it is an album. They have lots of material and plan to release another record next year.

McClelland and Doucet are married and have worked together extensively prior to the creation of Whitehorse. Doucet has produced the last three McClelland albums. They frequently accompany each other out on their individual gigs and both tour extensively as members of Sarah McLachlan’s band.

McClelland and Doucet have acknowledged that working together as Whitehorse has brought some changes to their joint working methods. Doucet has been involved in giving his two cents on McClelland’s songs and telling her what he thinks isn’t working. They have arranged and rearranged songs together, but not to the extent they are with Whitehorse. Here, they are actually bringing ideas to each other and finishing them for each other. Doucet is the producer on the album and so his producer’s role establishes a hierarchy in the studio. On this project, Doucet thinks they have levelled the playing field.

Whitehorse definitely has more of a sound than either of their solo careers have had. In support of their album, Whitehorse have a string of tour dates set for the U.S. and Canada. They’ll be Alberta in April 2012.

We are thinking of our friend Joe Gracey and his journey

On November 17, 2011, one of the greatest influences on Texas music left us for the distant shores. We remember the times we travelled with Joe Gracey on his long and courageous journey with Cancer. We feel so honoured to have shared the journey with such a person. He was indeed a friend of everyone at the Flying Horse Co. He will be missed in so many ways. Thank you Joe, you have made us Rich on The Journey.

On July 23, 2011, one of the generation’s greatest troubadours, Bill Morrissey, left this earth at the age of 59. It is hard to find the words to express the feelings of loss that always seem to hold the hand of regret and the fear of change before finally circling around to gratitude for a life that made us better. Thank you, Bill Morrissey, for the music.
